Ring Bearer Etiquette

Ring bearer etiquette rests more on the preferences of the bride and groom and whether there is a suitable child to fill the rolls. Ring bearers are not a necessary component in weddings as many couples choose to simply keep the rings with the best man until they are needed. However, when a ring bearer is used, there are certain do’s and don’t to follow.

Age
1. Technically there is no single ring bearer etiquette for age. Generally the bearer is a young boy between the ages of 3 and 7. The younger the child, the more likely he is to frighten and stray from his task. Ring bearers are not present in traditional Catholic weddings, and many Catholic churches disallow persons under a certain age from being present at the ceremony.

Relationship
2. Traditionally the ring bearer holds a close relationship to either the bride or groom as either a son, nephew, cousin, brother, or son of close friend. Choosing a ring bearer is up to the bride and groom, keeping in mind that it is an honorable position and should be given to the appropriate age son of the closest friend or relative.

Role
3. The main purpose of the ring bearer is to deliver the rings down the aisle and to hand them off to the best man. He usually follows behind the wedding party (bridesmaids and groomsmen) and can either walk with the flower girl, in front or behind her.
